Homology theory is an approach to topology which consists of attaching linear algebra invariants to each topological space, with the aim of distinguishing between them. In this talk we will show how a universal approach to this theory leads naturally to the stable homotopy category of spectra, which can therefore be seen as the Grothendieck motives for topological spaces.
